The AirNow index in parts of the Mountain West and Upper Midwest has spent more days orange or red this July and early August than in any comparable stretch since the smoke summers of 2023. If you've stepped outside in Denver, Minneapolis, or Spokane recently and caught that faint campfire smell with no fire in sight, that's not local — it's drifting in from wildfires burning across British Columbia, the Cascades, and parts of the Northern Rockies, sometimes from hundreds of miles away. Indoor air quality is no longer a side concern for people managing asthma, and it hasn't been for a few years now. It's a whole-house maintenance item, the same as your gutters or your water heater, and most homeowners still have no real plan for it beyond closing the windows and waiting it out. That approach worked when smoke events lasted a day or two; it doesn't hold up when the same house sits through five or six smoke days in a single week, which is increasingly the pattern rather than the exception. A closed window slows infiltration, but it doesn't clean the air already inside, and by day three that distinction starts to matter for anyone with lungs sensitive to particulate.

Your HVAC filter is probably the wrong one

Walk into any Home Depot or Lowe's and the filter aisle is a wall of nearly identical blue and white cardboard frames, and almost nobody stops to check the MERV number printed in the corner. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it's the single number that determines whether your system is actually catching wildfire particulate or just slowing it down slightly on its way into your lungs. Standard builder-grade filters run MERV 4 to MERV 8 — fine for dust and pet hair, useless against the fine particulate (PM2.5) that makes up wildfire smoke. You want MERV 13 at minimum; Filtrete's Healthy Living line and Honeywell's FPR 10 filters both hit that mark for $18–$25 per filter at most big-box stores.

Here's the catch nobody at the checkout counter mentions: not every HVAC blower can pull air through a MERV 13 filter without a fight. Denser filters restrict airflow more, and an older or undersized blower motor forced to work against that resistance will run hotter, cycle less efficiently, and in some cases trip a high-limit safety switch. Check your system's manual or call your HVAC tech before you upgrade past MERV 11 if your unit is more than twelve years old. Swap the filter and ignore this, and you risk a $300 service call to reset a system that just overheated pulling air through cardboard it wasn't built for.

The Corsi-Rosenthal box: cardboard, four filters, and a box fan

If wildfire smoke rolls in for a week and you don't own — or can't afford — a $200 HEPA purifier, the Corsi-Rosenthal box is the closest thing to a cheat code in indoor air quality. Engineers Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal published the design during the COVID years for a different airborne problem, but the physics is identical for smoke particulate: strap four MERV 13 furnace filters into a cube around a standard 20-inch box fan, seal the seams with duct tape, and you get airflow and filtration comparable to purifiers costing four to five times as much. Total materials run about $35–$45: one Lasko box fan (roughly $20 at Walmart or Home Depot), four 20x20x1 MERV 13 filters (around $4–$6 each), and a roll of duct tape.

  • Face the fan so it blows air out through the top of the cube, pulling contaminated room air in through the filter walls
  • Run it on the highest speed setting that isn't uncomfortably loud for the room — airflow volume matters more than filter density here
  • Replace filters after roughly 200–300 hours of smoke-day use, sooner if you can see visible grey buildup on the intake side
  • Don't run it in a room with a gas fireplace or unvented space heater without cracking a window; it moves a lot of air fast, and depending on your home's layout, that can pull combustion byproducts toward you instead of away

It looks homemade because it is. Build one anyway — for a single bedroom or home office, it will outperform most $150 purifiers on raw clean-air delivery rate, and that's not a close call once you compare CADR-equivalent numbers side by side.

If you're buying a purifier instead, the spec that matters is CADR, not wattage

Marketing copy on purifier boxes loves to talk about "coverage area" and app connectivity, but the number that actually predicts performance is CADR — Clean Air Delivery Rate, tested and certified by AHAM. For a 300-square-foot bedroom, you want a smoke CADR of at least 200; for an open living-dining space closer to 500 square feet, look for 350 or higher. Coway's Airmega 200M and Levoit's Core 600S both clear that bar in the $200–$280 range and use true HEPA media rather than the ionizer-only units that dominate the budget shelf at Target and generate ozone as a byproduct instead of removing particulate.

Skip anything marketed primarily as an "ionic" or "ozone-generating" air purifier for smoke season. The EPA has been explicit that ozone-generating devices don't meaningfully reduce PM2.5 and can themselves be a lung irritant at the concentrations some units produce indoors — which makes them actively counterproductive for the exact problem you're trying to solve.

Sealing the house without suffocating it

Weatherstripping around exterior doors and foam gaskets behind outlet covers on exterior walls cost under $30 total and meaningfully cut how much smoke infiltrates during a bad air day, especially in older homes built before the 1990s tightening of energy codes. Painter's tape over the gap under an exterior door works in a pinch if you're dealing with smoke that rolled in overnight and you don't have weatherstripping on hand yet.

There's a real tension here, though: the same sealing that keeps smoke out also traps combustion byproducts in if you're running a gas range, a gas water heater without direct venting, or a fireplace. A tightly sealed house with an unvented gas appliance and no working carbon monoxide detector is a worse trade than the smoke you were trying to keep out. If you seal up for a multi-day smoke event, put fresh batteries in your CO detector the same day — this is not the week to skip that five-minute check.

Watch the number, not the sky

Forget what the sky looks like.

Smoke that looks bad doesn't always mean the worst air, and hazy-looking days sometimes test better than clear ones depending on where the particulate has settled and how high it's sitting. Check airnow.gov or the AirNow app rather than judging by whether you can see the mountains — PM2.5 concentration is what your lungs respond to, and it doesn't always match what your eyes report. When the local reading crosses 100 (the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" threshold), that's the point to close windows, switch your HVAC fan setting to "on" instead of "auto" so filtration runs continuously, and turn on whatever purifier or Corsi-Rosenthal box you've got running. Above 150, keep kids, older adults, and anyone with asthma or COPD indoors entirely, box fan cube running, door cracked to the hallway if the room starts feeling stuffy. None of this fixes the fire itself. It just buys your lungs a better week while it burns somewhere else.
